Now Lots of websites are coming up with the special versions of their sites for their mobile visitors, and Apple iPad has resulted in a flood of tablet-optimized sites. These websites are modified so that they load very quickly and don’t come with those bells, whistles and widgets that weigh down full-featured sites. But since they’re sized for the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen, they also look great on a laptop or a desktop. So, we can use the iPad versions of Twitter, Google Reader or any other web app on a full-sized screen. You can fool any website you visit making them think that you’re surfing with an iPad, even though you’re using a desktop browser with a little tech trickery known as “user agent spoofing,”
Here are steps for Firefox users:
1. Type about:config in the address bar at the top of the browser
2. You’ll see a warning that you’re about to change your settings. Read the warning and click continue if you’re sure you want to proceed.
3. Right-click your mouse and choose New > String
4. In the box that pops up, name the string: general.useragent.override
5. The box will then ask you to enter a value for your string. Copy and paste this into the box:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10
6. Restart Firefox.
Now, when you will search the web, Firefox will present itself to the web server as an iPad, and you’ll be redirected to the iPad version of the website if it exists.
User Agent Switcher plug-in
You can also use a tool called the User Agent Switcher, a free plug-in for Firefox. In addition to making it easy to switch between the default and other pre-configured browser/OS agent strings, it can store custom strings.
Steps for Safari users
1. Go to Preferences, select Advanced tab and enable “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.
2. From Develop menu, click “User Agent” > “Other”.
To get true iPad experience, Mac users can download Apple’s Xcode with iPhone SDK and run iPad emulator. Downloading requires a registration but is free.
